The Model a painting

Dear Art Lover,
Part of the time spent in my former home and studio in central Texas has been spent painting.  I have so many unfinished works or sketches in both 2-d and 3-d that I still want to finish.

Many years ago I was interested in experimenting with marble dust on canvas, sculpting it a big at times to get a more 3-d effect on a painted work on board or canvas.  That was how I started this new painting “The Model.”

I have a mysterious art supporter who occasionally sends me things of interest.  If memory serves, he either sent me the film on tape of “The Model” or wrote to me about it.  In any event, this French film inspired the pose and the idea for this painting.  It records the moment of “unveiling” and I hope to have captured something of those mixed feelings one may have of anticipation, shyness, confidence, appreciation, and so many more things that often happen in an instance before the work begins.

Bergamo Italy

Dear Art-loving friend,
Here are some more images of my short visit to Bergamo, Italia, recently.  I do not really vacation well, I suppose mostly because I take a long time to make a work of art and feel always behind and never seem to have enough time to realize all of the things I envision.

So, I give you a reminder that the art installation of the colored turf in the main piazza finishes at the end of this month.  That includes the life-size pink cutouts of various locals who garden or create in some way.  I thought that the cutouts and the write-ups on them of each person depicted were an eye-catching way to make the colorful installation more personal.

I try to notice the beauty and interest in all sorts of things and my eyes dart in all directions.  The world is full of stimuli, after all!  And thus, I hope you enjoy the images taken through a keyhole.  Hahha… I was told once in my early days in Firenze that in Italy, “An open door is an invitation.”   I am not sure that I believe that….to misquote Freud, “Sometimes an open door is just … an open door.”  Also, I am fascinated by stairs.  Go figure.

But there is some truth to the observations that most of the beautiful gardens in Italy are within the corridors of the buildings.  Back in Medieval times when many Italian cities were built, people lived in fear of attacks and thus, the walls are thick and strong; fortresses really.  And people brought the Natural world inside of their walls.  I never tire of the giant ceramic pots with trees, or in this case, grasses.
Enjoy some more of Bergamo in northern Italy.

Critter Watch Italy

Cari Amici (Dear Friends),

My client wanted three buxomy babes in a pool setting with an Italian landscape and Roman ruins in the background. This evolved over time, as creative endeavors do. In late August or early September, I woke up with this idea that I did not want to create a voyeuristic situation as much as an inviting one. So, I decided to have the model try a pose that looked directly at the viewer and said, “Come on in; the water is fine.” Working in a visual language, sometimes it is difficult to communicate body language in text (e-mail). So, I shot a quick snapshot in my room while I struck the pose and sent it to the model to communicate what I wanted, time being of the essence by that point.

I am struggling now with the acrylic paint. It seems so much more fun on landscapes, but seriously, for large areas and, thus far, skin, I am still wishing for my oils. Mostly it is the fact that acrylic dries fast (creating hard edges if I am not on top of it!) and that the color dries darker than applied. That latter makes it difficult for me to match areas that I have worked on earlier. Hmmm, practice and experience with this material could help that a bit.

Today’s images are my “critter pics,” consisting of cinghiale (Italian for “boar”), a sunning lizard, and the swallows are back. Like the robins in central Texas, the swallows passing through here in Italia signify a season change. I wanted summer to last longer. I never got to swim enough and I like the warmth, as well as doing less laundry.

Oh, yeah, and one image of my “Invitation” figure that greets one as he enters the room. This image just shows Notan design. I tend to build off of that and use it to check shapes before developing the figure.

Kelly Borsheim is an American sculptor who likes to draw and paint. Michelangelo brought her to Italy in 2004 and it was here in Florence in 2007 that she became a streetpainter. It was on Via Calimala that she learned to love painting with pastels. In her current body of 2-dimensional work, she combines her classical training from the Angel Academy of Art (Florence) with her streetpainting, combining bright, colorful pastels (pure pigment) with the subtleties one can express with charcoal.

Kelly currently splits her time between her studio in central Texas and in Florence, Italy.
