Arch Female Nude Painting

Dear Art Lover,
Half the fun of returning to one’s former studio and home is revisiting favorite artworks.  Austin, Texas, is one of the wonderful cities that offers many opportunities for artists to draw from live models.  I went through a stage in which I wanted to work large and fast and experiment with metallic paints.  And I was still fascinated with the idea of appreciating the design of the human form up close.  This 2-feet-by-4-feet painting “Arch” was a fun one and I tried to photograph the detail shot so that you may have an idea of the subtle metallic sheen in some areas of the female reclining torso.

Kickstarter Follow-up

Dear Art Lover,
Bronze chasing metal work for sculpture Kickstarter project     Two years ago, I held a Kickstarter fundraiser to cast into bronze many of my wax sculptures that I created when I left my home studio in Texas and began attending an art school in Florence, Italy.  Years later, I could not stand the idea of losing all of that work just because the market dropped out (and/or maybe it was my fault for not keeping up with the marketing end of my business once I got to Italy).  The fundraiser was successful in that we raised the money for the foundry.
However, the foundry did not live up to its word, entirely.  As the deadline neared, it was clear that they were not going to finish my work.  My regular foundry had retired and while I got quote from several others with whom I was familiar, I chose to work with another family run foundry I had known and worked with for years.  However, these folks are also sculptors and in the end, they chose to prioritize their own project over those of their clients.  I ended up picking up my unfinished bronze sculptures.  So, the waxes were saved as bronzes, but the work was not entirely finished.

I spend the recent holiday weekend chasing bronzes.  This means that I carved my sculptures, removing bronze sprue connection points and investment mold pieces.  It was a lot of work on 28 individual sculptures.  Next will be to straighten out any bends in the metal so that the bas-relief sculptures lie flat, drill holes for mounting, clean them from all fingerprints, and then John and I will add the patinas (coloring) and protective covering, then mount to the stone bases, where appropriate.
One perk of the timing for this trip back to Texas is that I arrived in time to see the famous bluebonnets.  I hope that you enjoy these images and thanks for sharing in the art journey.
If you would like to buy a “Ten” or a “Valentine” bronze sculpture from the Kickstarter fundraiser, or any available work, please contact me:  http://www.borsheimarts.com/contact.htm

Back to Nature Painting Collaboration

Dear Art Lover,
It is not often that I have created a work of art with another artist.  But my friend and colleague Jean-Antoine Norbert, a man I know from art school in Florence, Italy, left for America back in 2014, and left some of his painting studies with me.  One portrait of a man had a splashy background of bright red; no doubt a sign of Jean-Antoine’s longing to break away from the school’s dreary dark green backgrounds for all figurative work.
I set this painting up in my studio so that I would pass it occasionally, keeping the image in the back of my mind, slowly developing an idea for him.  Even in the small Tuscan village I live in, the grown-ups complain that the young adults may sit together at a table in the local hangout, but they are not often interacting with one another.  Instead, they are each separately engrossed in their phones conversing with someone who knows where.  It is not a new idea to suggest that we not only have lost our manners, but are voluntarily giving up our social quality of life as human beings.
Earlier this year, I began to paint on top of Jean-Antoine’s study.  The title of this painting says it all for the glazed and almost hypnotized expression in this man’s portrait. Where IS he mentally?  “(Must Get) Back to Nature” is an expressed desire to reconnect with our Earth and ourselves.  In the language of symbols, butterflies often are a sign of transition.  And who does not love a hummingbird? (They were Jean-Antoine’s suggestion that I readily embraced.)  Hummers also represent speedy movement, perhaps Nature’s counterpoint to today’s technology.  And artists may appreciate the number in the UPC code.

This work is available for $1800.
