Dawn with Full Moon and the Sea

Dear Art lover,

“Up at Dawn” is not usually a phrase you will hear come out of my mouth very often.  However, the only reason for that is that nighttime arrives first and I love that time of day, apparently a little better.  This despite the fact that each time in my life that I have made a point to be somewhere outside between the hours of 4 – 7 a.m. it has always been a wonderful experience.

I hardly slept the night of 3 Feb… or the night before.  I am fortunate enough now to live in a place in which I can see the western horizon and I have tried, in vain, for the last two opportunities to see the full moon setting large on that horizon of sea and sky.

The moon rises about 50 minutes later each day.  So, I have been timing and watching.  Sadly, the last two full moons have also seen cloudy nights.   But I hoped on the 3rd night of this month's full moon that I would see something.  So, I was up and moving around 5 a.m. and walked out towards the sea.  I was surprised by how much further north the moon was going down compared to the sun’s exit place.  This first shot was taken around 6:20 a.m.  I was pumped.  Despite being about 10-minutes away from the bend where I could see that part of the horizon, look how large and red the moon was!  It is a bit horrible that I do not have a better camera and a better zoom lens!

Sadly, I missed the moonset.  I had quasi-run to the edge, worrying that once the sinking started, it would go fast, as it does.  Either I was slightly too late or there were just too many solid clouds on the horizon, I could not tell.  I thought to go back home to bed, but there was such a peace listening to the water lapping over the rocks and cement of the sea wall that I stood behind.  So, I pulled out my very long and thick scarf and balled it into a pillow and laid down on the wall, closing my eyes so I could just listen and breathe the clean air.

This second image shows the view north to a lighthouse.  And the rest of the images were taken as I walked back home towards the dawn.  Of course, I had to stop at “my” outdoor gym that faces the harbor.  I like to do the arm pulls whenever I pass by.  Then you see a new little amphitheatre that the city of Umag, Croatia, is adding to the sea walk.

I should do this more often.  I love walking along the sea with so few people about. However, it is cold which explains the peace.

My latest art newsletter is getting a good response, considering that I am still having problems sending it to my subscription list.  Six months ago, I went to Australia to judge an art competition and teach art workshops in Queensland.  After my jobs were done, I flew south to Tasmania.  See Devils in the Sanctuary and other goodies in Tasmania.  Click here:

And, as always, thank you for your continued interest.  Share this with anyone you think might appreciate it!

Tasmania in the Clouds New Painting

Dear Art lover,

Tree lovers unite!  I went to Tasmania last June…the beginning of winter in that hemisphere and also the end of Tasmania’s tourist season.  My new friends there told my friend Amber and me that the weather that time of year could have been anything.  We enjoyed perfect weather, in my book.  We got fog and rain, but it was not too cold, considering.  We got sunshine and amazing vistas.  And we were amongst the trees, so many amazing kinds of trees!  Hiking weather was great and with so few others out and about, it really felt almost like undiscovered Nature.

I would like to introduce to you a new oil painting that I created to remember the feeling of mist in the trees. I hope you like her.  She is available and I wish that I could show you the full size.  I love these larger, but still manageable painting sizes!

Clouds Over Florence Italy

Cari Amici (Dear Friends),

My head is often in the clouds. I wish that I could fly.

Florence, Italy, receives great clouds and has interesting silhouettes with which to frame them. This first image was one that I took last night. I am ever grateful that I had to go out to buy more art supplies for my current projects and that I timed it so that I had a half an hour after all the stores close before meeting a few friends at Rex’s on Via Fiesolana for aperitivo. Otherwise, I would have missed last night’s skies entirely.

This lovely sunset image was taken from Piazza della Repubblica. What wonderfully abstract shapes make up this sculpture on top of the obelisk! I should know more about this work but, to parody Star Trek, “I am an artist, not a tour guide!”

The second image was taken the evening before from the street outside of my room after returning from the grocery store.

And this third image was taken on New Year’s Day as I sat in the Loggia dei Lanzi wondering how long I should wait before heading over to Skye’s flat in the zona di Santo Spirito to retrieve my gloves and hat. [As it was, I arrived about 5 p.m. and she was just waking up from our previous night’s revelry. Heh.]

The silhouette of the head peeking out on the right is part of Giambologna’s magnificent sculpture “Il Ratto della Sabines” (The Abduction of the Sabine Women). Many people mistakenly translate ‘ratto’ to mean ‘rape’ but it does not. “Rape” in Italian is “violenza carnale.” In the Italian language, at least, there is no confusing rape with a sexual act. The verb “to rape” is “violentare” -- to commit violence upon someone.

I guess my head is not in the clouds now.
Scusami for my meandering thoughts.

Clouds

Always having been a dreamer of sorts, I am constantly watching the sky. One of my favorite pastimes is to photograph skies while I am flying. This image was taken around 8 am while I was just about to land in Chicago en route to Italy. From the ground shortly after I took this image, the skies looked dreary and it was snowing. But above the cloud line, something amazing was transpiring. I am often reminded that photography just cannot capture the feeling one has when surrounded by Nature’s beauty. Yet, I still strive to take a good image.

I hope you enjoy. Tomorrow I tell you more about my return to Italia.
Ciao, ciao.
