Carved Stone in Dripping Springs Texas

Dear Art Lover,
Phil and Michelle Hoggatt have been friends of mine for many years.  They live and work in Dripping Springs, Texas, with their home-based business called Carved Stone, Inc.  They are such good people and I am thrilled and honored to call them friends.  They create many products for the home (lamps, benches, etc.) from Texas limestone and sometimes other materials.
Many years ago they added a sculpture garden, creating a path through the shady parts of their property.  They have hosted many sculpture events and fundraisers for charities and visitors are welcome to stroll the grounds.  I hope that you will go visit some time and even take some of their stone creations into your home.  John and I arrived there late in the evening after we got delayed accidentally in Boerne for several hours, so I do not have any images of the Hoggatt’s lovely gift shop.

Visit them online at: https://carved-stone.com/

The bonus for my visit was that they still had a lot of blooming Texas bluebonnets!  I hope you enjoy their nightlights in the garden, as well as my snapshot of the full moon overhead us during our visit.

Gemini in Boerne Texas

Dear Art Lover,
I have been working in Texas for several days now, back in my former studio/home.  Saturday, John and I drove to the re-opening of the new Sculptor’s Dominion large garden sculpture exhibition in the new location in Boerne, Texas.
We brought my bronze figure sculpture “Gemini” with us and put her up on a pedestal.  The site is the home of Gilbert E. Barrera, a friend of mine for many years after he traveled from his former home in San Antonio to Austin in order to connect with other sculptors.  He came to the Elisabet Ney Sculpture Conservatory, where I was teaching at the time and where the home of the Texas Society of Sculptors was back in the mid-1990s and early 2000.  And a bunch of us helped him start his dream show.

His new location is his family ranch of about 300 acres.  I understand from some of the guests this past weekend that the Barrera family is well-known and respected in San Antonio.  Gilbert’s father is famous and recently turned 90 years old.  He still practices law.  Gilbert has done a lot of work on this property, including restoring an old log cabin from the time of the famous battle at The Alamo.  It is a beautiful location.  The old oak trees are amazing, a personal love of mine.
Gilbert exhibits all styles of sculpture and materials that are strong for outdoor display.  You are sure to find something that you enjoy there and hopefully want to add to YOUR garden!  If you find yourself in central Texas, please contact Gilbert for a visit to the Sculptor’s Dominion.  You may reach him on Facebook or by e-mail at gilbertebarrera@gmail.com
I hope you enjoy the images here, which also show just a few of the many large or really large outdoor sculptures!

Selling Stone Marble Alabaster Texas

Dear Art Lover,
It pains me to say that I have to sell some stone.  I have a huge block of 36” x 18” x 18” Colorado Yule Marble.  It was cut from the quarry in Marble, Colorado, in 2003 near where they were searching for stone replacements for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C.  It is a lovely piece of rock and I had wonderful plans to carve a male torso from it.  The block weighs almost 1200 pounds and the price is $1200.  I drove this from Colorado to my (now former) home in central Texas (Bastrop County, SE of Austin).  Pickup only, although we will help you load the stone into your truck or van.

I am also selling the large {Texas) limestone block that you see here being lifted with an A-frame and chains.  [The Colorado Yule block is the white one in the background.]  I do not know the weight or dimension on this stone, but is it larger than the Yule.  However, limestone is less expensive than marble… I will accept $600 for that stone… a mermaid, can you not see her?

I also have several smaller stones.  The next featured is a gorgeous piece of the famous quasi-transparent white Italian alabaster.  I paid $600 and that is what I would like to receive for this beauty.  She is 244 pounds.  There is another piece of Italian alabaster that I started to carve into a giant snail shape… if interested in that one let me know and we can see what we may work out.  And you see a piece of marble in the foreground.

I will be returning to Texas in early April and deciding on the fate of a lot of my belongings there as I prepare to move most of my life to my new home in Italy.  I am sure that I will have other art materials for sale, but until I return and have some time, I may not know.

If you are interested in being contacted once I have more information, please let me know soon.. this trip is short and packed with so much travel and visiting along with work that the more organized I am before I arrive, the more I may help you receive something you want.

Thank you so much for hanging out with me and reading along!

Peace,

Kelly

Compatibility Couple Sculpture Live Models

Dear Art Lover,
Artist Kelly Borsheim sculpts nude couple during live model session art
Well, it is now past the dawn of a new day, but not the eve or the dawn of the next day!  I do believe that every kindness we do adds to our collective energies and a better life for everyone.
Today I want to celebrate love (again).  In the couples Open Studio sculpting sessions I mentioned yesterday that I held in the drawing room of the AVAA (Austin Visual Arts Association in Austin, Texas, USA), I also hired one of my favorite models at the time.  I loved how she used her hands during her short poses, especially.  She invited her husband to model with her.  That was amazing since as I commented in yesterday’s post, it is a lot to ask for two models to touch in an intimate way for long periods of time.

It was a wonderful time we artists had with our models.  They both said it was quality time for them, as well, since they hardly slow down in their lives.  They found this comforting and a good experience for them to be together in this way.

The two images of me sculpting with our models was taken by a friend of mine, Carol Schumacher of Bastrop, Texas, who was doing her own sculpture on the other side of the models.  I did the crop and added the little modesty color.  I always insist that artists ask the models before taking any photographs.  I prefer that they do it in private and BEFORE the day they want the photos.  I am a bit of a model advocate and also, I am a shy person.  Sometimes when confronted with a question one was not expecting, it takes time to think a bit to figure out how one really feels before giving an answer.  I also do not like the models to be asked in front of other people because she (or in this case, they) may not mind one person taking images, especially if she knows that person… but it could open the door to bunches of cameras… in my mind, permission for one is not necessarily permission for all.  I prefer for the model to have full control over these sorts of issues.
