Dear Art Lover,
I hope this letter finds you at home and virus-free.  Thank you for all of the messages asking how I was and am doing during this lock-down in Italy.  I have been mostly home-bound since the 24th of February.  Despite a few allergies and a wee bit of bronchitis, I am fine and my life at home is fairly normal.  The big change is that I no longer take my daily passeggiata (walk) or visit with my 87-year-old neighbor and friend Genoveffa.  She is vulnerable and nervous, as one might imagine.  And I was a higher risk than most, having come from Venezia right after they cancelled all Carnevale celebrations in The City of Canals.
I was happy to get home fine on the trains so that I could be locked into my studio for the duration.  Italy has been taking the Corona Virus quite seriously and is fairly open about it.  We all need to be that way.  Sharing accurate information is not only effective, but respectful and caring.

Since so many of us around the world seem home-bound, I thought I would try a fun project.  If you would like to send me an image of what you love about your home or being home, I will post them on my blog.  A one-line explanation, if necessary, is fine.
Bonus points if your image contains my art in the picture.
So, send me your images as well as how you would like the credit.  For example,

I will assume that your sending me your image is giving me permission to publish it.  Let us see how many countries and distant locations where we can show our solidarity!

Award-winning Art:  Sleeping Angel
So, I was also thrilled to receive an e-mail that my pastel portrait of a man sleeping in a bed on rumpled sheets won “Outstanding Pastel” in January’s BoldBrush competition.
Inspired by Caravaggio’s angel baby Cupid painting, you may view the award page with all other winning artworks here:

Thanks ever so much for your interest and support!

Vasily Fedorouk:  Dream
I am often moved by the sweetness in the expressions that Vasily carved on his marble figures.  His cloud series is one of his most charming.  I love how his shapes make me FEEL the soft curves in the figure, so touchable.

Please see more of my late mentor and friend's work here and by all means, let any of the available artworks bring you joy by adding them to your own art collection.  [Contact his wife via the site.]

2020 Art and Tour Workshops in Tuscany
At this writing, I have not cancelled the scheduled painting workshops in Tuscany that I am offering, one each month, starting at the end of May and continuing through October.  I work every day, pretty much, and as long as I am doing something, I am happy.  What that means is that I am able to work with your schedule and understand that some of the dates may change to accommodate any changed travel plans on each student’s part.  I cannot wait to introduce you to this little piece of paradise in Tuscany!
Dates for EACH 5-day workshop in 2020, your choice:

June 26-30
July 17-21

Carnevale Menu art & Casanova Grand Ball with Atelier Marega:
Also, I was in Venezia for the Carnevale [Car-nay-val-ay] celebrations on 22 February.

You may see the painting I created for the menu cover for Atelier Marega’s Casanova Grand Ball 2020.  I felt a bit like Cinderella when the Marega family invited me to attend the spectacular event in Palazzo Zeno, including donning one of their handmade period costumes by the incredible Silvia Crepaldi.

How about that?  Flat Stanley and I sat at the table with these lovely TEXANS!

I had uploaded images of the event here on my Facebook page.  It is open to all to see:

During that time in February, I was also helping the young elementary-school-age son of a cousin in Minnesota with a “Flat Stanley” project.  I received a hand-colored Flat Stanley paper doll holding an Italian flag with a “I love Italy!” written across his chest.  When a neighbor saw the doll, he taught me that the Italian flag actually has the green bar next to the flag pole.  I had to admit that I never noted that myself.

Good to see you and that you are being safe and creative. We are more just safe. We stay home a lot anyway but now that we have to, ugh.. Soon we will be complaining about having to go out.

Thanks for all the news and beautiful photos. Hugs.

Thank you, Jo... not being creative? Hard to fathom.
Yes, I think resistance to being told what MUST be done is natural, but I hope not defining.
I am glad you enjoyed the images. I had a blast making the Flat Stanley pictures for little Andrew. It gave me courage to speak with many people in Venezia... ice breaker not about me!
Glad you both are doing well and thanks for commenting! xx
