Divine Beauty Devotional Art

Dear Art Lover,
Bouguereau

I had hoped to write about this art exhibition at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy, while it was still happening, but I got sidetracked.  I am currently in Austria seeing people that I love, so I have little time at the moment.
The exhibition was titled, “Bellezza Divina / Divine Beauty” and included works from Van Gogh to Chagall and Fontana to my favorites, Antonio Ciseri (1821-1891).  While many of Adolphe Bouguereau’s works seem sappy to some art critics, the enormous painting in this exhibition is absolutely stunning.  I cannot imagine anyone walking away from it without admiring the artist who conceived and painted it.

Anyway, here are the images.  If you want to know the artist, please leave a comment on my blog page and I will get back to you once I am home again in February.

Thank you … and enjoy the devotional art and divine beauty.  This was a wonderful exhibition!  [More images below.]

Colorful Abstract Paintings

Dear Art Lover,
Every artist, like every person probably, goes through a variety of phases through his life.  If you are like me, perhaps you see your phases as a connected part of a longer process.  I hope that each phase shows a mind at work.

Today I thought that I would share with you my “colorful macro phase” or the use of the human figure as abstract patterns because I zoomed in on them… and my attempts to push myself into bright color, which is an area in which I have never felt particularly comfortable.  These were done in 2005, before I began street painting in Italy and really diving into color.

So, to remind you of the deal:

Legs in Purple and Blue Abstract painting of Human Figure

I would like to offer, for the month of August 2015 only, selected paintings and drawings for about half the price as my going rate these days.  These are older works, but ones that for one reason or several others, I cannot stand the idea of destroying.  You may preview images before I post them here on my Facebook page.

Please contact me directly if you see something you love and would like to add to your art collection.  Here goes the first one…

Dave with Janet and SkySeries Tryptich Paintings

Dear Art Lover,
Today’s August offerings are two… but one is actually a combination of three small paintings.  Both artworks are from various life drawing sessions I attended in Austin, Texas, with great models.

In case you missed yesterday’s post:     I would like to offer, for the month of August 2015 only, selected paintings and drawings for about half the price as my going rate these days.  These are older works, but ones that for one reason or several others, I cannot stand the idea of destroying.  Please contact me directly if you see something you love and would like to add to your art collection.  Here goes the first one for today …

Dave and Janet were/are very well-known and often hired models during many of my formative years in Austin, Texas.  It is likely that every figurative artist in the past 20 years has drawn or painted them at least once.  Dave always likes to push himself, in his running and in his modeling.  He worked to make his poses interesting from many angles.  Even at his older age (from most of my colleagues and me), he designed poses that were difficult to hold.  The pose you see here of Dave is one that I have painted many times, from many angles.  He said he was inspired by Michelangelo.
Janet is a lovely person.  I have painted her less often, but always enjoyed the experience.  I think that I painted at her session first.  I was in a stage of my artistic journey in which I felt overwhelmed having only three hours with a model and was still doing body parts and using them to find interesting compositions.  I often compose  triangles in my work.
These two wonderful models, real people and real friends, also posed together for me for the bronze sculpture titled, “I am You.”  They taught me so much during that project!

Ciompi Antique Market Florence Italy

Dear Art-loving Friend,

Today I start my last term at the Angel Academy of Art (yesterday, a Monday, was a holiday in Italy).  I have been preparing for the challenge of painting three still-life paintings, each with a specific list of things to learn, as well as working with live models.

The hunt for objects to paint can be fun or frustrating, depending on the score.  Here are a few of the things that could have been found at the most recent installation of the antique market in Piazza Ciompi in Florence, Italy.  The market fills the piazza every 4th Sunday of each month.

Happy Hunting, indeed!

And happy new year.
