Compatibility Couple Sculpture Live Models

Dear Art Lover,
Artist Kelly Borsheim sculpts nude couple during live model session art
Well, it is now past the dawn of a new day, but not the eve or the dawn of the next day!  I do believe that every kindness we do adds to our collective energies and a better life for everyone.
Today I want to celebrate love (again).  In the couples Open Studio sculpting sessions I mentioned yesterday that I held in the drawing room of the AVAA (Austin Visual Arts Association in Austin, Texas, USA), I also hired one of my favorite models at the time.  I loved how she used her hands during her short poses, especially.  She invited her husband to model with her.  That was amazing since as I commented in yesterday’s post, it is a lot to ask for two models to touch in an intimate way for long periods of time.

It was a wonderful time we artists had with our models.  They both said it was quality time for them, as well, since they hardly slow down in their lives.  They found this comforting and a good experience for them to be together in this way.

The two images of me sculpting with our models was taken by a friend of mine, Carol Schumacher of Bastrop, Texas, who was doing her own sculpture on the other side of the models.  I did the crop and added the little modesty color.  I always insist that artists ask the models before taking any photographs.  I prefer that they do it in private and BEFORE the day they want the photos.  I am a bit of a model advocate and also, I am a shy person.  Sometimes when confronted with a question one was not expecting, it takes time to think a bit to figure out how one really feels before giving an answer.  I also do not like the models to be asked in front of other people because she (or in this case, they) may not mind one person taking images, especially if she knows that person… but it could open the door to bunches of cameras… in my mind, permission for one is not necessarily permission for all.  I prefer for the model to have full control over these sorts of issues.

After The Bath Sculpture Women

Cari Amici (Dear Friends),

It is not so often that I get the opportunity to sculpt two models posing together. However, some years ago in Texas, I was able to host anOpen Sculpture Studio with Austin Visual Arts Association. I hired two great models and did a couple of sculptures of them. It is quite interesting to have people hold a position for hours (with breaks, of course; the body is simply not designed to stay still for very long!) while touching each other. Touch is so personal, even the most seemingly casual or insignificant.

Today’s featured sculpture “After the Bath” is the original “sketch” in clay that I created during a short series of modeling sessions (perhaps three sessions of three hours each?). These photos were taken during the patina (coloring) process out in my wooded studio in Texas. The two women are of different ages and physical physiques. I like the contradiction of shapes and forms. I like the openness of this composition to interpretation. What is yours?

Art Open Studio

Cari Amici (Dear Friends),

Well, I guess that I have now been officially sculpting so long that I have little memory of sculpting the child’s portrait shown here. See what a delight it is to be moving and sorting through all kinds of hidden “treasures”? This little boy was probably done around ten years ago, shortly after I took a portrait class with sculptor Eugene Daub at a workshop in Colorado. This piece is water-based clay and was never finished. However, plastic garbage bags do not really keep in the water; they simply delay the drying out. You can see how the unfired clay cracked as it dried: Kind of a cool effect.

So, come on out and see what other surprises there are. I am also having a moving sale and selling or giving away art supplies in several fields (photography, fabric arts, sculpture, etc.)

This second image was taken during my recent book signing at the Community Renaissance Market (CRM) in Austin, Texas. Susan Wenck is showing of her new copy of my book “My Life as a Street Painter in Florence, Italy.” She is standing in her shop called “Renaissance Apothecary” and showing off (on her hand) the big Pandorus Sphinx Moth” that was discovered just outside of CRM.

Incidentally, I am starting to get feedback from people who have received their shipped copies of my book. The wonderful thing is that a few have been so pleased that they have placed GIFT orders now! One new book owner, sculptor Gene Piersa in Minnesota wrote:
Thanks Kelly. The Book arrived in perfect shape, I felt excitement on every page I turned. Bottom Line, I Love the book content and the quality overall.
Hugs and Best Wishes,
Gene P.

P.S. Happy birthday to my sister Danielle who flies into Texas tonight to see her new nephew!

Art Open Studio Texas

Dear friend,
Well, I have just spent the last 16 hours or so trying to figure out why I cannot send out my art newsletter to my subscription list. So, I am hoping that Facebook and my blog here will get the word out to most of you who would like to know about the following events. First one is TODAY!
Thank you for your continuing interest.
'night (nap time) and see you at the book signing later today,
Kelly

Dear Art Lover,

Hello again. I just wanted to send you an invitation to my last Open Studio in the place that I have lived and worked for over 20 years.

Besides letting you see the near-finished marble “Gymnast” that I hope that you have been following the creation of via my blog, I will also be introducing two new works. Both are inspired by the divorce that I have been going through this year. The first is a bronze “The Unwritten Future” and the second one is a 30” x 40” oil painting titled “New Year’s Eve.” Images will have to wait until my next newsletter.

While this kind of thing is never really happy, per se, I am not trying to share depression or anything dramatic. And moving offers opportunities for many, including an array of good deals on selected artworks, time to visit, and also a sale of a variety of art supplies and random goodies that I just cannot take with me. I hope that you will come out to this event or the few others I have before I leave Texas in November.

Cari Amici (Dear Friends),

In case you have not received your invitation via either my art newsletter or on Facebook, please consider this blog posting as your invitation to my upcoming Open Studio:

Artist Kelly Borsheim's
Open Studio

What is happening on the easels and in the stone yard?

Enjoy a short ride to the country outside of Austin and Bastrop, Texas, sip red wine or cider, and take a sneak peek at what is going on in an artist's studio. Kelly will have several works-in-progress (WIPs) on various easels, including paintings and drawings. Also, you can see how far she has gotten on the stone carving of "The Gymnast." This is a figurative sculpture that must be completed by 1 March for an exhibit in San Antonio. [So there may be a bonfire out here if the weather gets too cold to carve in!]

Male Nude Art

Cari Amici (Dear Friends),

After seeing my artwork at Sei Divino’s here in Florence, Italy, some time ago, an acquaintance told me that he would like to become a nude model. So we talked about how to go about applying for the job and I would hire him to work for my Open Studio at the Angel Academy of Art.

When the day came, he was late. I called him and he said, “in 15 minutes.” I responded, “Ti aspettiamo.” (We are waiting for you.) When he arrived, he asked, “We? I thought I was modeling only for you.” Uh oh. How could that have happened? Not wanting him to feel put on the spot, I showed him the workspace and the model room and told him that he could leave the robe over him as he desired.

Fabric is wonderful to draw and when it is on a model it is even more complex because it never returns to the pose in the same position. One must work fast and one ends up creating a composition of many variants. Our model did a wonderful job and afterwards told me he would love to model again. I told him that the school closes its Open Studio sessions soon and it would be October before they start up again. He was very sweet and replied that he would wait for when I come back because he prefers to work with me in the session. So, here is my charcoal figure drawing of the charming Giovanni.

“Giovanni --10 Giugno 2009” 17” x 11” $150, includes shipping.
