Exploring Europe Original Painting of Young Couple Traveling

Dear Art Lover,
Hmmm, it is August already!  I hope that you received my latest art newsletter.  It contains Part II of the images I wanted to share with you of Genoa, Italy’s amazing sculpture museum (aka, the cemetery).  If you have not seen the images… please check out the page online:

Other news is that I had a bit of a shock when I returned to Texas recently.  I left far more art here than I realized.  So, in order to help me move once I find a place to live and get back to carving stone, I thought that I would try something new.
I would like to offer, for the month of August 2015 only, selected paintings and drawings for about half the price as my going rate these days.  These are older works, but ones that for one reason or several others, I cannot stand the idea of destroying.  Please contact me directly if you see something you love and would like to add to your art collection.  Here goes the first one…
young couple shares a pizza in front of a fountain Germany

Exploring Europe -- AVAILABLE NOW [original art]
24 x 18 cm [about 9.4 x 7 inches] Oil on wood
copyright 2007 Kelly Borsheim

This painting was inspired by my trip around parts of Europe in 2006 as I traveled to see exhibitions of Eugene Carriere, my favorite painter.  At this writing, I cannot remember where exactly I was when I saw this young couple enjoying the lazy, care-free life, eating pizza and sitting next to a large water fountain that squirted the water UP. However, I believe that I was in Germany when I saw them.

I finished this painting after I settled into Florence, Italy, in 2007 [hence the board dimensions in centimeters], but now the work is with me in Austin, Texas.

I offer this original painting to you for only $50 US.  Texas state sales tax (6.75%) may apply.  There is also a $9.50 packaging and shipping fee.

Please contact me for more information.
Thank you and as always…

Peace,

Kelly

Bike Life Florence Italy

Dear Art-Loving Friend,
My father once suggested to me that I “go ahead and get this Europe thing out of my system and come back to live in the States.”  I think he has turned into my grandmother.  She worried constantly.  But that was years ago and while I still have not worked out how to have permanent residence here in Italy, and my life is in limbo, I think I have convinced those who care about me that I am not finished with Europe.

One of the perks that is difficult to argue with is the wonderful public transportation.  I love walking and biking to most places in Florence, Italy, where I live now.  When I need to go somewhere else, I can usually take a bus or a train.  Some people complain about the services in Italy, but I have not encountered many problems and am amazed actually by how train, planes, and even motorways are all created and organized.
Anyway, most of Europe basically dies in August, with most people heading towards the surrounding seas for rest and relaxation.  It is a bit bizarre, especially since August is the time when many tourists can visit, especially if they have school-age children.

I have been doing my best to seclude myself in my new space here, at least during August. I have two easels set up and the doors to my balcony remain always open.  This is for my sanity.  I am working on many paintings, allowing the layers of oil paint to dry while I work on other images.  And sadly, I have not yet solved all of the Web site problems after I transferred in late June to a new host company.  My contact form and order forms do not yet work.  But I have discovered that there is only so much frustration I can take in one day and do not wish to spend more than a few hours each day on this.

In any event, I hope that you enjoy these snapshots I took around the Arno River in Florence… ah, the bike life!  I am shown here with my friend Biljana, visiting from her home in Serbia.  We took a day trip to the charming San Gimignano recently (the exception to my August rule).  You may see some of those images on my Facebook page, if you like.
Thank you for sticking with me on this art journey and I hope August is good to you.  Me?  I must get back to my paintings.

Siena Italy - Santa Maria della Scala Hospital

While in Siena on Saturday, Hafiza and I also visited the Santuario di Santa Caterina and the museo archeologico inside S. Maria della Scala. If you first pay to enter the exhibit “Nel segno di Ingres” nearby, you will receive a ridotto (reduced) price ticket to enter this building.

Santa Maria della Scalla was one of the first hospitals in Europe. A cobbler named Sorore who died in 898 is its mythical founder. The hospital was not only an important economic resource for Siena, but also became one of the city’s most important centers for art. It remained a working hospital until only some years ago when the restoration project began and has been used for various exhibits since then. It is an impressive building.

The art inside was not particularly moving, although I did rather enjoy the fresco of several babies climbing up a ladder that was leaning against an archway in a church. Above the arch was a fresco of a mother that appeared to come to life so she could welcome these babies.

The museo archeologico has been set up in the labyrinths underneath the chapels in Santa Maria della Scala. This is where I took the photos you see. One hallway housed many old stone urns. They were rather funny reclining/half-seated figures on the lids, many with large heads. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the tunnels. And the second image of a vase – well, I not only liked the arrogant figure depicted, but also the shadow shapes around the vase. I hope you do as well.
