Kickstarter Follow-up

Dear Art Lover,
Bronze chasing metal work for sculpture Kickstarter project     Two years ago, I held a Kickstarter fundraiser to cast into bronze many of my wax sculptures that I created when I left my home studio in Texas and began attending an art school in Florence, Italy.  Years later, I could not stand the idea of losing all of that work just because the market dropped out (and/or maybe it was my fault for not keeping up with the marketing end of my business once I got to Italy).  The fundraiser was successful in that we raised the money for the foundry.
However, the foundry did not live up to its word, entirely.  As the deadline neared, it was clear that they were not going to finish my work.  My regular foundry had retired and while I got quote from several others with whom I was familiar, I chose to work with another family run foundry I had known and worked with for years.  However, these folks are also sculptors and in the end, they chose to prioritize their own project over those of their clients.  I ended up picking up my unfinished bronze sculptures.  So, the waxes were saved as bronzes, but the work was not entirely finished.

I spend the recent holiday weekend chasing bronzes.  This means that I carved my sculptures, removing bronze sprue connection points and investment mold pieces.  It was a lot of work on 28 individual sculptures.  Next will be to straighten out any bends in the metal so that the bas-relief sculptures lie flat, drill holes for mounting, clean them from all fingerprints, and then John and I will add the patinas (coloring) and protective covering, then mount to the stone bases, where appropriate.
One perk of the timing for this trip back to Texas is that I arrived in time to see the famous bluebonnets.  I hope that you enjoy these images and thanks for sharing in the art journey.

Painting The Woodlands and Galveston Texas

Dear Art Lover,
I drove to the Houston area this weekend, about 2-3 hours east of Austin, Texas, where I am hanging my hat for the next 30 days.  I timed my visit to the Italian Consulate so that I could see as many friends along the way as possible.  The first meeting happened on Saturday in The Woodlands, north of Houston.  Pinterest was having an arts and crafts event in the Marriott Hotel… what a space it was!  My friend Nancy Hines was doing an painting demo there.  In ONE hour!  She did an amazing job of it, too!  Check out her work on her site:

Then on Sunday morning, I drove to Missouri City to meet with a model who wanted to work with me.  We decided to drive to the beach in Galveston.  Hahah… I got my TacoCabana fix for lunch.  We worked under the pier since I am not a fan of direct sun and we had too few available hours to wait for the sun to lower her head.  While we were working there, a woman asked me if I had a business card.  She and her daughter had decided they wanted to picnic in the shade under the pier near us and had overheard us talking as we worked.
Well, the only things I had brought with me were my tools, an umbrella, and car keys.  So, I wrote my Web site address in the sand in front of her and she photographed it with her phone.  Hahaha… surreal, this world we live in.  I do hope that she looks me up because that is a lovely story about meeting a person!

Hours later, I dropped my new model friend at his home and drove on into central Houston.  This last image is of me with Lucrecia and one of my photographs on metal.  Her sister Lili will receive this as her reward for the level of support she gave my “Casting Call:  I’m Melting!  Melting!  Into Bronze” art project on Kickstarter this past March.

And this last image is just a fun one.  Back in Texas and the land that loves hot sauces, made with a variety of hot peppers.  Enjoy…
Peace,

Kelly

We're Off to See the [Bronze] Wizard!

Dear Art Lover,

I am actually trying to meet a painting deadline before I must pack up all of my things, leave my flat, and prepare for the next stage of the adventure.  So, please forgive my lack of posting… I have lots more of Italia that I want to show you.  However, for now, please enjoy a few snapshots I took when I went to visit my new friend Camila on her last day (this trip) in Firenze.

They had some sort of festival going on May 8, so the Loggia in Piazza della Signoria and also the statue of Neptune were lit up with colors.  Plus we experienced another gorgeous sky that evening.

Kickstarter campaign update for “Casting Call:  I’m Melting!  Melting!  . . . Into Bronze.”

I am delighted to announce that most of my wax sculptures have now safely made it to the bronze casting foundry in Texas so the work can be started! [My part in the wax work had already been done.]

This is all due to the generosity of time and driving by John Borsheim and fellow sculptor Marla Ripperda, people I have known and loved for decades. John packed up the sculptures and brought them to Austin, met with Marla, and Marla took them to the foundry a couple of hours away. I feel very grateful for their help since it has turned out that my travels around the US once I leave Italy in a couple of weeks make it so that I will not arrive in central Texas until mid-late July.

YAY! You have made the casting commence! Thank you so much!

Peace,

Kelly

P.S. If you have not sent me your mailing address or your choice of specific Reward yet, please do so. I will be ordering the prints and books in about a week.

Buona Pasqua

Dear Art Lover,
I want to wish you a very happy Easter weekend.  ("Buona Pasqua" means "happy Easter" in Italian.)  Whatever the significance this religious holiday has for you personally, I hope that you can appreciate the general concept of good triumphing over horror, and new life returning to us.

I will be working in Italy until June when I return to the States for this bronze casting project and even some stone carving.  Yes, that is right.... THANK YOU for a successful Kickstarter art project crowd funding event!

However, if you are curious at all about how Florence, Italy, celebrates Easter, I have a couple of blog posts that you may find fun.
